[1.B - Legal/Safety Crap]

Now for the precautionary stuff...

I'm not responsible for any damage caused to yourself, others,
property, etc. This information is provide for entertainment purposes
and should be exploited whenever possible.

I'm also not responsible for any straining of the eyes due to my
horrible spelling and/or grammar.

You've been warned... so don't do anything too stupid.

Now on with the show.

-----

[1.C - My Background]

My name is Matt, but I'm known as LOKI and am a part of the Sacramento
area DDR group called the Sacramentals. I'm been making edits for about a year
now. I can truly say that they have made me a better player. They
helped me excel in singles, then move onto doubles and finally cata's.
Today, I own 5 memory cards packed full of edits I play, most of which
are crazy edits...but that's what I'm known for. Anyway, enjoy the FAQ.
I put lots of work into it, and will try to keep it pretty current as
things are discovered.

All right let's get this party started...

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
SECTION 2 - THE BASICS
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

[2.A - Why Edit?]

Do you ever find DDR getting too hard or too easy? Ever want to create
your own dance steps? Or practice certain step patterns?

Edits can help you do this. They can reinvent the dancing game all over
again because there is an endless possibility for challenges and fun.
(God that sounds corny.)

-----

[2.B - Why Edit Hack?]

Why not? Edit hacking can be fun for a ton of reasons:

1. You can make edits for songs that aren't on home versions and
likely never will be (Korean, petit love, etc.)

2. You can make edit without the home versions.

3. You can make edits with freezes without owning DDRMAX

4. You can make freezes in old songs not on DDRMAX

5. You can do other fun things (I will outline this later)

-----

[2.C - What you need to get started.]

YOU NEED:

- A PC (duh...)

- A dexdrive or equivalent device (I personally use a PSXchanger,
it's a playstation, N64, and gameboy memory card manager all in
one. Bought it at GAMESTOP.COM)

- A hex editor. I recommend FRHED v1.566. Get it at:
http://www.blueneptune.com/~zio/DDR/hack-diy/frhed156.zip

- At least 1 OFFICIAL SONY PS1 Memory card. NOT THIRD PARTY, PLEASE!

THINGS I RECOMMEND YOU HAVE:

- A playstation with DDR home versions

- DDREDITMAX ( http://oaxsoft.virtualave.net/ )

- A program to convert Card Captor Sakura files (*.mc) to Dexdrive
format (*.gme) or whatever format your device reads. These sites have
two nice looking ones, and in English, too!
PSXGameEdit: http://moberg-dybdal.dk/psxge/
PSXMemTool: http://psxmemtool.ngemu.com

- Step Charts for the songs your editing

- WINACE archiver (for uncompressing thee *.lhz files)

-----

[2.D - The Setup]

- Install and connect your DexDrive or equivalent device to your PC

- Download and install all software (hex editor, DDREDITMAX, file
converter)

- If you have trouble getting DDREDITMAAX to run see the installation
information later on in this FAQ.

+-----------------------+
THE DDR EDIT FORMAT *3*
+-----------------------+

Ok before we get started you should have a basic understanding of how
edits work.

-----

[3.A - Basic Edit Terminology]

Ok here's where stuff get technical. For the rest of this FAQ you'll
see me refer to a few key terms. Here are some basic terms to
familiarize yourself with:

MDAT: This tag denotes the song's length in bars. Or at least, it is
supposed to... there are noted exceptions, but we'll get into that
later.

BARS(Measures): A total of 16 possible steps (16 - 16th beats, or 4 -
quarter beats)

SONG ID: Just like it sounds a value given to a song in DDR in place of
the title.

FREEZE ARROWS: Introduced in DDRMAX, these arrows must be held for the
duration of the freeze.

ARROW FREEZES: Not to be confused with freeze arrows, this is where the
song's arrows stop for a moment then resume (so fabulous so fierce,
abyss, etc.)

-----

[3.B The Data Decoded and Dissected]

We'll start off by looking at one of my edits, DYOXIDE in *.MC format.
Keep in mind that this is the .mc format. Each format varies in its
layout. So if you use something like a .gme file or what have you,
you're not going to match up with this layout.

This is the standard playstation save format used in Japan and most of
the edit data out there is in this format. It really doesn't matter
what format you edit in because they're all about the same except for
the addresses being a little different due to different stuff added to
the beginning of the file (this is called header data). But mainly once
you learn to edit the *.mc format you'll be able to make out all the
other formats easy.

Anyway, the first thing I did for my hex editor was change the window
properties to display either 8 or 16 bytes per line (the default is
often something else... on mine it is 15 per line for god knows what
reason) I will be using 16 for my explanations. In Frhed just go to
options - view settings and change the bytes to 16 per line and uncheck
the box below it so it uses your settings.

OK here a hex dump of DYOXIDE. To the right of the hex value is the
ASCII display and to the left is the starting address for each line. If
you've never worked in hex before, the addresses progress in hex
format, 0-9 then A-F. So if I wanted to edit the second line from the
top and 11 spaces to the right the Hex address for that byte would be
001B. It will become easier the more you work with it. Anyway, moving
along... Check out the file below.

---File Continued (it's all blank from herre on) ---

Ok we'll begin from the top.

Starting at

0000-007F: Memory card header area, which contains the product code
and the name of your edit. DDRMAX USA saves the product
code as "BASLUS-01446". By following the instructions
above, this code changes to "BISLPM-86252", which denotes
the home version of Japanese DDR 4th Mix. It does not
matter if the song you're editing is actually available in
4th Mix (or earlier) or not. Immediately following the
product code is an 8-byte string which is the name of
your edit.

0080-00BF: File Comments area. This is apparently the area that both
PSXGameEdit (and other memcard utilities) and the PS2
look at to get displayable title and game information.
The instructions above replace most of this area with
plain text, whereas DDRMAX USA (and all other versions of
DDR, apparently) save this area in some form of
machine-readable code. I don't know why replacing it
with plain text (which the PS2 doesn't recognize,
apparently) causes the arcade game to read the edit, but
it does.

00C0-028F: PSX Icon animation data. Modify if you want, using an
editing utility such as the one provided by PSXGameEdit.
The above instructions replace this area with the animated
icon for DDREditMAX. It should not matter what the icon
is, however.

0290-02AF: This is what I'd like to call the
"--DanceDanceRevolution--" lines. (why gee, I wonder...)
It marks the start of the actual edit data file.

02B0-02B1: This is what I call the "Arcade Machine Code". This line
apparently lets the DDR machine know what mix the song is
from. I really actually don't know what it means. I just
know you have to have a proper code for the edit to work.
Here's the list of the machine codes that are most relevant.

DDR EXTREME: 93E9
DDRMAX2: 8EC1
DDRMAX: C23F
DDR 5th Mix: 3746
DDR 4th+, Solo bass, Solo2000: B123
DDR 4th: DD4D
DDR 3rd, 2nd, and 1st: 0000

02C0-02C1, 0300-0301: Both values are the MDAT value for the edit.

The values = # of BARS * 16 converted into hex, then the
byte pairs are reversed (because of the Intel-style byte
format) so for this edit it would be like this if we worked
it backwards to find out how many bars are in this edit:

1004 = 0410, converted to decimal format = 1040.
1040 / 16 = 65. So there are 65 bars in this song.
Pretty straightforward.

02C4-02C5, 0308-0309: Song ID value, bytes also flipped

So this song's ID would be 00EE, but is displayed as EE00.
There's a list of these values near the end of this FAQ
(APPEND A).

02C6,0304 These two are the Game play Type value. It denotes what type of
an edit this is. Here's the set values:

Single: 00
Couple: 01
Double: 02
6-Panel (SOLO): 03

0305-0306: Whatever these are, they are always 0301. I don't know what
they are but your edit won't work if you change them to
anything else.

02C7,030A: These are the Difficulty and Class type. The first value is
equal to the difficulty class (0 - no class, 1 basic/light,
2 - trick/standard, 3 - maniac/heavy). The second value is
the actual difficulty in feet (0-9). Modify if desired
- DDRMAX USA saves this as 00 (No class). DDRMAX2 (arcade)
ignores this value completely.

030B: Freeze Arrow Flag. For DDRMAX1 and above, this byte denotes
whether the edit uses Freeze Arrows. If it does, the arcade
machine will read a separate section of the edit file for
freeze information. More on that later. Presumably, this
byte and the freeze data section are completely ignored by
DDRMAX(ARCADE) and below...

0310-070F: This is the actual step data. Obviously the ending value
will be different depending on how long your song is that
your making an edit for. Each row represents 1 full bar
with 16 places for steps to be added. Here's what all that
data translates to.

There's a few thing you should know about how the edit data is set up.
For one it sort of backwards thanks once again to Intel. Meaning if I
have a value of 48 it translates to UP on the Player 2 side (RIGHT
STAGE) & Right on the Player 1 side (LEFT STAGE). For the rest of the
data translations see the chart below.

Data is displayed like so (PLAYER 2 SIDE, PLAYER 1 SIDE)

STEP DATA CHART:
0-No step
1-LEFT
2-DOWN
3-DOWN AND LEFT
4-UP
5-UP AND LEFT
6-UP AND DOWN
7-UP, DOWN, AND LEFT
8-RIGHT
9-LEFT AND RIGHT
A-DOWN AND RIGHT
B-LEFT, RIGHT, AND DOWN - not supported
C-UP and Right
D-LEFT, RIGHT, AND UP - not supported
E-UP, DOWN, AND RIGHT - not supported
F-Activates Triplets (1/12 steps)

6 PANEL (SOLO) DIAGONALS *DIAGONALS ARE PLACED ON PLAYER 2 SIDE*:
1-diag. up left
4-diag. up right
5-both diags

A few things to remember about step data:

1. Singles' edits with have duplicate data for player 1 and player 2
sides.

2. Triplets are activated with "F" then the next 3 step following the
F are the 1/12 notes. Triplets last for only 1/4 bar.

3. As stated above 7, B, D, & E are not supported step types. They
may show up in editing programs but they will not be displayed as
3 arrows or at all when you play them in the arcade or at home.

4. Yes it is possible to have 3 or 4 arrows displayed at once with
solo edits. 1 or 2 of the Arrows are the diagonals and 1 or 2 are
the standard 4 directions (UDLR).

-----

[3.C - STEP LIMITATIONS]

Here's a list of step combinations DDR machines do not like and how
they will display them if you try.

Singles:
*7, B, D, E: I believe these don't show up at all or show up as LR arrows.

Doubles:
*7, B, D, E: I believe these don't show up at all or show up as LR arrows.

*L on P1 Side and any arrow on P2 side: The machine doesn't wasn't you
tearing any groin muscles that shouldn't be tearing so it displays a
nice set of 2 center arrows (R on P1 Side, L on P2 Side)

*R on P2 Side and any arrow on P1 Side: Same as above, displays two
center arrows(R on P1 Side, L on P2 Side)

*U on both sides: two center arrows

*D on both sides: two center arrows

*U on one side and D on the other: two center arrows

*2 arrows on one side and any arrows on the other side: Basically any
attempt at displaying more than 2 arrows on one line will not work and
I believe only player 1's side will be displayed from my experience.

6 Panel:
*7, B, D, E: I believe these don't show up at all or show up as LR arrows.

SECTION 4 - BASIC Edit Hacking Method
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

[4.A - Editing on the PSX then changing the Song ID]

This is done on a home version of DDR that allows editing.

Simply find a song on the home version that you are using that is
larger or the same size as the song you're making an edit for, and make
your edit using that song.

I usually refer to a step chart to read the
rhythms in a song. Maniac singles or doubles step charts work the best
because they have the most steps in them to look at and work from.

When you're done, save your edit onto a memory card then put it on your
computer using your DexDrive or whatever device you have.

All you'll need to do now is change the song ID and machine code if
it's different then the song you're making the edit for. Save the
changes and put the result back on your memory card in place of the
original. (It's a good idea to keep a backup of the original edit just
in case, but that's your call.)

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
SECTION 5 - ADVANCED EDIT HACKING
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

[5.A - FREEZE ARROWS]

Like I said before the starting and ending hex addresses will be
different depending on which song your making an edit for. For our
example, our freeze arrows begin at 0710 and end at 0B0F.

Basically to figure out where your freeze arrows begins you have to
know how many bars you song lasts. We found this out earlier in the FAQ
for our song, whose MDAT say it lasts for 65. So seeing as how every
line equals 1 bar, simply count down from 0310 the length of your song
(65 in this case) and you'll end up at 0700. So the next line is where
your freezes start, or 0710 in this case. Freeze data is treated
exactly like normal step data except there's a few rules you can bend.
Here what you can get away with.

-----

[5.B - Freeze Arrow Limitations]

Steps that were not allowed before can become freezes if they are
separated by 1/8 of a bar. The only thing that will not work with
freezes is displaying 3 arrows at once.

A freeze arrow must cover an 8th of a measure before it will show up
properly on a DDRMAX/2 arcade machine. A 16th-Freeze is possible in
DDRMAX USA at home, but for some reason this does not work in the
arcade.

A freeze cannot be placed with triplets.

All freeze arrows must begin at a regular arrow to work.

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
SECTION 6 - DDREDITMAX
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

[6.A - About The Program]

This section will cover the best editing program out there, DDREDITMAX.
What makes this editor great. First off it supports freeze arrows. It
has all the song ID's for the MAX2 songs. Also it generates pretty
spiffy step charts. It has a function to use DDR OST's to play music to
sync the steps to just like the DDR home version editors. Finally the
save function works, which definitely makes this editor stand out.

System Requirements:
-16MB RAM (64MB+ Recommended)
-Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/XP
-Pentium 266MHZ
-Visual Basic 6 Runtime (I think this iis iincluded in the file, if not
you can get it from Microsoft.com)
-Media Player 6 or higher (for playing mussic files to sync steps to)

-----

[6.B - Installation]

1. After Downloading DDREDITMAX uncompress the archive to you hard drive.

2. Run OCXreg.bat (This will copy the system files for you and register
the necessary drivers)

BTW if for some reason your archive is missing OCXreg.bat (I had this
happen one time I DL'd the program.) simply copy and paste the batch
file below...

---Start OCXreg.bat---
@echo off
echo Choose Operating System
echo.
echo 1 ... Windows95/98/Me
echo 2 ... WindowsNT/2000/XP
echo 3 ... Exit / Cancel
echo.

CHOICE /C:123
IF ERRORLEVEL 3 GOTO EXIT
IF ERRORLEVEL 2 GOTO WINNT
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO WIN9X

:WINNT
echo OCX,DLL Copying System Files
COPY .\*.OCX %SystemRoot%\System32
COPY .\*.DLL %SystemRoot%\System32
REGOCX32 %SystemRoot%\System32\HKLink.ocx

REGOCX32 %SystemRoot%\System32\MSCOMCTL.OCX
REGOCX32 %SystemRoot%\System32\EventEx.ocx
GOTO EXIT

---End OCXreg.bat

3. Run DDREDIT.EXE and away you go.

-----

[6.C - The Main Editing screen/ Basic usage]

On the main screen you'll see your editing space on the right side.
Above that will be the menu bar and the song selection bar. To the left
of the editing section will be your measure / bar count, a toggle for
edit style (single, couple, and double), difficulty settings, edit name
box and music preview button. I've also taken the liberty to
translate/decode all the buttons for you. It looks something like this:
(hurray for horrible ASCII)

Basic Usage:

When you start off you'll have a blank window for editing. The default
play type is Single but you can check the box of which type you'd like
make. You can name the edit by entering a name in the EDIT name box (8
characters MAX). Below the edit box is your Arcade Code checkboxes.
Simply check the box which your song belongs to (most of the time it
will be the first home version mix the song falls on, I.E. On The Jazz
is a DDRMAX song but it first appeared on DDR 5th for the PS1 so it has
a 5th mix arcade code. Same with DDR Extreme songs that appear on the
MAX2 home version, they will have the MAX2 code not DDR EXTREME).

Here's some of the basic controls:

Left Mouse Button: Place Arrow
Right Mouse Button: Delete Arrow
CTRL + Left Mouse Button: Place Freeze Arrow
CTRL + Right Mouse Button: Delete Freeze Arrow
SHIFT + Left Mouse Button: Place Triplet

[6.E - Important things to remember]

There are few Bugs/concerns with the program that you should be aware of.

1. The program always saves edits with the DDRMAX, DDRMAX2, or DDR EXTREME
arcade code (depending on which box is checked on the edit screen). If
you are using a song not originating from those mixes, to avoid much
stressing over why your edit steps aren't being recognized by the
machine, just download DDREDIT (same makers, earlier program meant for
5th mix and below). It follows the same layout, but actually works for
older songs without any hex editing needed. God knows why the makers
didn't put that into DDREDITMAX, but let the song list remain.

2. Also make sure you watch when you save after starting a new edit
after opening an edit. I've accidentally saved over edits I've made
before by mistake a few times

3. There have been some issues with using DDREDITMAX, in that sometimes
a save file, when opened, gives an error like "DDR2nd??????". Somewhere
along the line, the save's header has been corrupted. Don't fret, though!
What you can do is this: Set up a new step file, with the song, the label,
difficulty, etc. Then, open up that base file in a hex editor. Copy
everything from the top line to the Dance Dance Revolution line, and paste
it *over* your old "corrupted" save. Save your newly repaired file. It
should work now.

That's all and happy editing.

+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
SECTION 7 - KONAMIX EDITS: Where they went wrong...
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+

[7.A - The let down...]

Everybody was excited when konamix came out because of the new edit
function that was added. Problem is like the rest of the game it was
hurried and so became extremely buggy.

Actually it's not too surprising seeing as how konamix is really a
hacked version of 4th mix much like extra mix but worse.

Below is a copy of an AM-3p (303 BASS MIX) Doubles file. Take a quick
look as I explain what went wrong....

[7.B - The Problem]

The main problem that is causing almost all the edit not to work is the
Machine code (02B0-02B1). If you remember back to the beginning of the
FAQ you'll know that's the 4th Mix interface machine code used in SOLO
BASS, SOLO 2000, 4TH, 4th+, and extra mix. Since this game is a hacked
version of 4th they either A. Couldn't change the code to be different
for different songs, or B. Overlooked and forgot to change it. Either
way that would eliminate any song from anything other then the versions
mentioned above from working or about 90% of the songs. Now as far as
I'm aware there is nothing like a country lockout or code similar to
something like that. It wouldn't make sense because even if that were
true since this is a hacked 4th mix which was a Japanese game it would
work anyways.

[7.C - Phantom Steps]

Now as far as the phantom steps that appear in drop out edits my guess
would be bad coding. Here's a before and after of the end of a dropout
save from KONAMIX. The before is after the initial save. The after is
after reopening the edit to see all the phantom steps then re-saving.

As you can see it's KONAMIX that is messing up how they're displayed
because both files are identical. So even though it looks as if your
edit is messed up those extra steps aren't really there.

[7.D - Converting USA edits to work with arcade]

Pick a song in DDRMAX USA or DDR Konamix that is also in the arcade,
eg. on DDR MAX 2. For the purposes of this guide, I'll use Ecstasy
as an example. Create your edit and save it with the name you want
(ex: VARIETY1), then use the Library Manager to "Output" (export)
the edit file outside of the Edit Library. This saves the edit as a
PS1-compatible file. NOTE: You *CAN* use Freeze-Arrows in your edit,
even if the song is from a mix that didn't originally support them.

If you're doing an edit via DDRMAX USA, reboot your PS2 and eject
the CD so you can get into the browser. Insert your PS1 memory card
into the spare slot and make sure you have one slot (8 KB) free.
Copy the newly-saved DDRMAX edit file to your PS1 card. Verify that
it's there on your card - it should read
"DDRMAX // EDIT (...) VARIETY1". It won't have a "last saved/updated"
timestamp on it if you look at its details in the browser. (Konamix
edits are automatically saved on the PS1 card.)

Now, insert the PS1 card into the DexDrive and use PSXGameEdit to
read the contents of the card. I recommend saving a full image of the
card before continuing. Your new edit should show up in PSXGameEdit
in one of the slots, with the title
"DDRMAX EDIT (...) VARIETY1 (...) US". Underneath the animated icon
for this save, the "P. Code" (Product Code) will read "SLUS-01446",
and the "G.ID" below that will read "VARIETY1".

Select this edit and then go "File >> Save Single Game Save", and
give the resulting file a name of your choice with the extension
.mcs (ex: VARIETY1.mcs). Then CLOSE PSXGameEdit to avoid any
problems with "File In Use" or "Invalid File Type" error messages.

Now, here comes the fun part.

Open up the VARIETY1.mcs file in your hex editor (I'm using XVI32).
If necessary, resize the window so each row is 16 bytes long
(eg. 0000-000F, 0010-001F, etc.). You should see something like this
file: http://www.descent2.com/dorsola/games/ddredit01.gif

Download a copy of this file (if you haven't already):
http://www.descent2.com/dorsola/games/dwi/ddreditbase.mcs

and open it up in a separate hex editor (or window if your hex
editor supports multiple windows). Select the entire contents of this
file and copy it to the clipboard (either as a text string or a hex
string), then OVERWRITE the data in your edit file with this block
you just copied, starting at address 0000. This replaces the product
code, the comments area, and the PSX icon, but does not affect the
edit data itself.

Then, go back to the top of the file and, at address 0016, enter the
name of your edit, up to 8 characters. You can also enter this at
00B2, but it isn't necessary.

At this point, save your modified edit file, preferably with a
different name (VARIETY1_converted.mcs) so you have a backup of the
original. Then open PSXGameEdit, open your full memory card image or
redownload it from the DexDrive, and go "File >> Open Single Game
Save" and select your newly saved file (VARIETY1_converted.mcs). This
will load the modified Edit file into a spare slot on the card. It
should show up with the same name, but the new Product ID code, and
the region should now read "JP" instead of "US". Then go
"Memcard >> Write MC Quick" or "Write MC Full" to write the
new info to your PS1 card.

Comments: This method has worked for me with edits for three
different songs now. I cannot explain WHY it works - it doesn't
look like it should work, but it does. There is a side-effect that
I haven't solved yet, however:

Your edit will show up in the PS2 browser as a file with no title
or game information. It will just be a floating icon (if you use my
edit-base, the icon will be the one created by DDREditMAX) that's 8K
in size. I recommend using the DexDrive to manage your edit files once
you've converted them. You also cannot read the newly saved edit file
with either DDRMAX USA or DDR Konamix. I don't know if it'll be
readable by a Japanese version of DDR.

--- Another option would be to use thiss prrogram:
http://www.lvcm.com/taiki/convert.zip created by LV Taiki. It's
a command line based edit converter. I haven't tested it but it
supposed to work quite well.

In the next few updates here's what I want to cover:

Delve into the finer workings of the new MAX2 ddr edit format.
See if we can find a way to do 1/32 steps and what not.

Other exploits: We'll see what other fun stuff we can pull off (3
arrows at one time, steps longer than the music, etc.)
